Lions Leap Podcast

Lions Leap is a Hungarian history podcast built from the letters of one Hungarian Jewish family whose lives ran from Budapest to New York. Voice actors read the originals, and historians fill in the world the letters were written in.

Built From Real Letters

A Hungarian History Storytelling Podcast

Lions Leap is built on the family’s own correspondence. Voice actors read the original letters, historians and other experts add context, and personal narratives carry the story from one episode to the next. Because the letters belong to a Hungarian Jewish family, the series is a Jewish history podcast and a family history podcast as much as a Hungarian one, and its personal narratives give it the closeness of an oral history podcast.

Episode Topics

The series follows a century of Hungarian and Hungarian-American history through the people who wrote the letters:

The 1956 Hungarian Revolution
Communist persecution in Hungary
Immigration to America and the immigrant stories behind it
Hungarian Jewish culture
The arts
Women remaking their lives on new terms

The Family Archive Behind Lions Leap

The letters come from the archive Lisa Levitt has spent years gathering, alongside her grandmother’s paintings and sketchbooks, from a family that left Budapest in 1939 and rebuilt in New York. For anyone who follows a heritage podcast or a genealogy podcast, Lion’s Leap shows what one family’s records can become when they are read aloud.
